Materials and Technologies for the Design and Renovation of Timber Building Components in Historic Buildings
di Marco Alvise Bragadin, Michele Naldi
Timber technology for construction is old and young at the same time. Complex building construction techniques have been developed, and performed on-site, for centuries and more. Therefore, timber engineering for historic building rehabilitation projects needs to be rooted in the study of ancient design solutions for technical components. The research work undertaken has its foundations in deep understanding of structural behaviour of wood and timber as building materials, and develops the structural and technical understanding of timber building structures functional elements and components, with the renovation and structural reinforcing perspective. Timber structures construction processes for historic buildings are described through analysis of historic textbooks with suggestions of modern reinforcing and retrofitting techniques.
